Debut Recording Coming in 2023

Some of the Parts of the Whole Story...So Far - Original Compositions

I am very happy and proud to announce that in 2023 I will be recording a collection of some of my original instrumental compositions on my debut commercial release. The repertoire will draw upon influences from jazz, blues, rock, funk, latin, cajun, country and more with plenty of fun grooves, singable melodies, cool chords and progressions, and last but not least...odd meter. Listeners will be dancing and singing in 5/4, 7/4 or 11/8 before they know it!

Some of my greatest musical influences include Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Pink Floyd, Jaco Pastorius, E.S.T., The Bad Plus, Joni Mitchell, Justin Haynes, Kevin Breit & the Sisters Euclid, The Eagles, Stan Rogers, and The Rolling Stones and those will come out in the music.

In addition to making this music available for digital download or streaming, my main commercial goal is to make this music available for sync licensing opportunities within the film, television and video game industries.

I am grateful to acknowledge the support of ArtsNL, which last year invested $2.35 million to foster and promote the creation and enjoyment of the arts for the benefit of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

The Black Sheep, 5 George Street, St. John's, NL

For the first time in about 15 years Loco Motif will be performing live. Who or what is Loco Motif and what will they be playing?

Well, I'm glad you asked!

Loco Motif was a quartet started by Bill Brennan and Kirk Newhook about 20 years ago so they could play a weekend gig at Grafenberg's with drummer Mike Billard while he was home from TO for a visit. They asked bassist Jack Daw to join them and he came onboard as well. After that initial gig they played a few more times at the Wreckhouse Int'l Jazz & Blues Festival over the next few years but all got busy with other things and as quick as that 15 years went by.

They played groovy, funky, rocky, spacey, notey, beautiful music by John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Steps Ahead, John Hiatt, Neil Young, Herbie Hancock, Mike Stern, Gary Peacock, David Sanborn, Sisters Euclid and of course, Bill Brennan. This time they'll play a lot of those same tunes, but will also be playing some of Kirk's originals and who knows what else?

Joining Bill and Kirk this time will be Jacob Slous on drums, David Bridger on bass, and Newfoundland native-not-long-back-from-20-years-in-Vancouver-saxophone playing and all around nice guy Dameian Walsh.

It's going to be a lot of fun and we hope you can join us there.
